Double Danger

A pinball tournament for teams of two

Stuck in town for the long weekend? That's okay - your vacationing friends are going to be jealous of YOU because you get to come play in this superfun TEAM PINBALL TOURNAMENT at the fabulous Scarlet City Espresso Bar in Emeryville while they are off taking lame pictures of mountains or listening to boring wedding toasts or whatever.

Format details are explained below. You play in teams of two and entry is $10/team. ALL skill and experience levels are welcome and encouraged to join. (To keep things fun and competitive for everybody though, we do have a restriction on teams - the combined WPPR ranking of both members of a team must be greater than 3000.)

DATE AND TIME
Saturday, May 23rd, 2015.

Start time is 2pm, and on-site registration will open at 1pm.

Scarlet City is open starting at 8am on Saturdays, so players are welcome to arrive as early as they like to practice.

LOCATION
Scarlet City Espresso Bar, 3960 Adeline Street, Emeryville, CA.

COST TO PLAY
$10 entry fee per team ($5/person), plus the cost of games played during the tournament.

FORMAT
The format for this tournament will be "cross-player doubles*."

For each round, teams will be paired up and assigned a machine by the tournament director. The group will start a four player game, where one team will be Players 1 and 4 and the other team is Players 2 and 3.

On the first ball, each team gets to choose which member will take which position. (So if Team A is Players 1 and 4, they choose who goes first and who goes last). On the second ball, team members switch. (So, whichever player was Player 1 during ball 1 will be Player 4 during ball 2, and vice versa.)

On the third ball, the team gets to choose again which team member will play which position.

At the end of each match, points will be awarded as follows: highest score: 4 points, second highest score: 3 points, third highest score: 2 points, lowest score: 1 point. The points from both games played by each team will be combined for the team's match score. This means the lowest score a team can earn per match is 3 points, and the highest score a team can earn per match is 7 points.

How many rounds of this we play will be dependent on how many teams show up. Basically, the plan is to be done at 5 and play as many games as we can fit in by then.

* Rules and format for this tournament are shamelessly stolen from Seattle's Beltown Brawl.

ELIGIBILITY
The tournament is open to anyone who wants to play! Players of all skill levels, even total beginners, are encouraged to participate.

However, there is a restriction on who can play together in a team. The combined world pinball player ranking of both players must be greater than 3,000. So, a player with a ranking of 400 could pair with a player ranked 2800, but not with a player ranked 2200.

If you don't know your ranking or know about pinball rankings, that most likely means you are eligible to participate with any partner you choose. Players who are not ranked may pair with anyone they like.

PRE-REGISTRATION
If you would like to register your team in advance, you can do so here: http://goo.gl/forms/RMzYttD5Ei. Pre-registration is entirely optional. On-site registration will start at 1pm the day of the tournament and there is no limit on the number of teams that can play.

Team eligibility will be evaluated according to IFPA rankings as of Monday, May 18th or whenever after that the team signs up. (For active competitive players, this means that points from SFPD will be included but if you sign up in advance you don't need to worry about any rankings changes from Pin-a-Go-Go.)

AWARDS
All cash from entry fees will be paid out to players as prizes. There will be awards for the teams finishing in first through fourth place.

Additionally, we have a few other fun prizes that will be awarded to some lucky participating players via a random drawing at the end of the tournament.

GAMES LIST
Current machines at Scarlet City are Demolition Man (Williams, 1994), Star Trek: The Next Generation (Williams, 1993), Terminator 2 (Williams, 1991), Genesis (Gottlieb, 1986), and Space Invaders (Bally, 1980).
