So I have owned GOT Premium for about a week now. I have over 50 plays on it. I have to say this is a great game. Everything I had hoped for and more. I will breakup my review in to the different categories that it is rated on.
GAME DESIGN
You can tell a lot of thought and time went in to this game. The elevator is very innovative as it really adds a new layer to gameplay. The diverter really turns two shots (left orbit, right orbit) in to six different shots. You have complete left orbit, complete right orbit, left orbit to pop bumpers, right orbit to pop bumpers, right orbit to upper play field, and right orbit to throne. Really great layout where ever shot is attainable by both flippers. The one drawback is that the playfield is a bit crowded and unforgiving. If you brick a shot its most likely going SDTM. Even the battering ram is a gamble as it's comes back at you SDTM a lot of the time. The game I think would have been a good candidate as a wide body. Other than that I love everything about it. The upper play field is great and adds a new dimension to the game. The dragon is a cool toy, and even the battering ram is a great toy. Especially with a shaker motor! The battering ram shot has a great feel with a shaker motor. Shaker motor is a must for this game!!! The game design and toys plays very well with the rules and strategy. They go hand in hand. There is not incomplete code here! Great game experience out of the box! Can't wait to see Dwight utilize the upper play field more, but if there were no more code updates I would be very happy right now. It is pretty complete!
ARTWORK
The artwork is probably the biggest drawback from the game, but that is because the rest of the game is so great! I would have liked a bit more GOT theme instead of just the gears but in most part the play field art works well for the game and the lighting. Its good but not great or as nice as say what The Hobbit play field looks like. The back glass is good and so is the cabinet. Colors and theme work well, just wish they placed more prominent characters on the back glass and cabinet. Overall, I am satisfied and its not a game breaker. The DMD animations work well with the game. The show clips work well too. Of course, it would lights out if it was a LED display but it is what it is. The DMD is good and explains the make very well. I am still holding out hope an upgrade kit to an led display is in the works for this game. You can tell this game was supposed to be the first LED display game but for some reason or another it got scrapped.
SOUNDS AND MUSIC
Both are great!!! Music is top notch, sounds are great, and callouts are great as well. Unlike TWD, this game actually has real clips from actors of the show! The Hound works well with the game and so does the female with the british accent. The sound really immerses you in to the game. Top notch for sure!!! The sound quality is also nice. The speakers are powerful and makes for a great experience.
OTHER ASPECTS
Lighting: I love the game lighting! Flashers are well placed, and light show is amazing. I did turn down intensity and it did help brightness. I like bright games and this game is perfect for me. The color changers are awesome and is programmed well in the game.
Lastability: Though I am in the "honeymoon" stage I think even with current code this game has so much going for it that I see myself playing this for a long time. You always just want to play "one more." I never got that feeling with TWD or KISS.
Theming: The theming is great! I do feel like I am in the GOT World. Its the sound and music that does it the best. I do wish more actually GOT scenes and characters were on the play field though.
Fun: This game is just plane FUN!!! Once you understand the rules and strategy it is a blast! I am glad I own one because I would be dropping a lot of dollars in to this game.
OVERALL
In my opinion this is Sterns BEST game up to this point Everything about it is impressive. I don't even think it needs that much "modding." Out of box it looks nice. Gameplay is fast and fun, but also unforgiving if you don't hit your shots. Ruleset and programming is top of the line. Dwight outdid himself on this game!!! Design is innovative and fresh. Steve is the King!!! His best for sure. I will gladly buy another Steve Ritchie game again unplayed. You can't lose!!! This game deserves to be in the top ten and Stern has raised the bar for sure! If you are on the fence, pull the trigger on this game, you won't be disappointed.
