This is the premier league of pinball design and gameplay. The sum of the parts is at the very highest standard it could be and once again JJP has raised the bar. Only time will tell about the quality of the playfield in terms of wear and tear. Who knows and I do accept that older pins may see more cycles.

Maybe we could do with a guarantee of cycles played. Back in the 1990's I never paid much attention to the durability of a pin, you paid your money in the pub and the game played like it should. Almost 30 years later surely technology for materials and coatings should allow for a pin to be more bulletproof regardless of OEM?

Either way, this pin, the CE edition and the theme chosen, is a total combination at the highest order. New out of the box this is the absolute best in class. Only time will tell on playfield quality and we will see how that goes over time. I have a TZ and TAF with original playfields after all of this time and they would have seen over 10,000 plays for sure and they are all okay. Let’s hope JJP, Stern and everyone else can deliver the same.

GNR CE edition is the pinnacle of pinball technology, where will it go from here?

A great game from JJP and it is fantastic to have a number of pinball machine manufacturers competing with each other and creating pins right now in 2019 with a distinctive difference between each other. POTC is a fantastic machine. This review is for the CE edition rather than the LE or standard so I dont have a comparison for differences between the two. The technology JJP has in this game is at the highest level.

The screen size is huge and being a wide body pin it is crammed with some great features and game play. Virtually all shooters and coils are adjustable using the control panel which is such a great tool using the game admin controls. This is a good game for the family and occasional player also and with a bit of time you can create a lot of ball control. My favorite wide body pin before this one was STTNG, but this one is as good as it gets for engineering and fun also.

Edit this rating was implemented before the CE version was available on Pinside :)

Ok so my first Stern pin review and my very first new pin. The theme is a really good one and will resonate with the generations that actually watched the original show and its reruns. Those in my circle who have played this have said that it is a mercedes compared to a ford etc (no offence intended as I have had both also with fond memories). I think that what they mean is that compared to older pins, the statement should be compared to an an old merc vs a new one rather than manufacturer vs manufacturer.

The game offers great game play for all levels of player. The mini play field is a bit of fun really and with some practice you can get some usage out of it, but dont panic with the clock ticking down as yo dont get long in this part of the game. The game is fresh with great artwork and design, it is also easy to play, but also good fun. I can see people who have the TAF liking this one in many respects.

I think that new pins always have a high expectation. Maybe this is a T2 equivalent which is also a great pin at the time, but I actually think it is more, maybe much more. Having played the Walking Dead I think this is in the same category, maybe a top 20 pin, but it is great fun as an LE and there will be some good condition home use ones out there over time to get hold of. A good pin overall.

One of the few games that was good enough to be remade. I think that when a remake occurs that in itself is testimony to the original. I have not played a remake as yet so don't have a comparison, but MB as an original is a good all round pin. Following on the heals of MM there are some similarities but this game is a great original design.

I can see why they have held their value as there are not many around, a good game for all profiles including the casual player or the more serious one. Pinball almost died soon after this one was launched so a few plus points for being the "end of an era" pin, but a great one to play on.

TZ is more for the connoisseur compared to an all found family fun pin or a commercial pin that would be played by the widest spectrum of society. Maybe more complex that is should have been. I can see why it scores high within the community, but some of my clan have this as their least favorite pin.

It is a good one to have in the collection as it is very unique if anything it is that. There is no other pin like TZ and totally different from its predecessor TAF in may ways. It is almost like two pinballs in one and maybe a bit over the top for the time, but in other ways the pinnacle of the era and a benchmark ensuring that the follow on years would offer high standard game play and game design.

At the end of the day the number speak for themselves as this sold lots of units. A great one for restoration and a classic forever in time. I can see people being torn between the 90's pins vs the 10's + pins. Technology is now allowing for some fantastic pins being produced and released at the same frequency as back in the old days so we will see where this on sits in the top 100 a few years from now.

This is a great game from now a long time ago. A good game for the family and as a wide body I actually think it is more balanced than TZ which is way more complex from the same era. A little bit of bias would be that this version of Star Trek is my era also. This a great game to have in a collection or on public display as a coin operation pin.

A good pin even alongside the best that Stern can come up with a full 25+ later. One bonus is that it can be purchased for way less than the TAF, TZ and others with plenty of them being around in differing conditions. If you are getting one fully restored you wont get your money back, but we will see just how much a minty version will go for when it celebrates it 50 anniversary in 2043.

If you do undertake a restoration it will be for the love of it and to make sure that the next generation enjoy it just as much as the last :)

This is a classic pin from a classic era. I think this is the one that anyone can play regardless of age, skills and experience. The whole family can play this and enjoy it with anyone being able to win across a wide range of standards. My first pin to own, but a great classic well remembered from the 1990's in pubs at the time.

I can see why this one has the record for the most sales, great theme and game play even by today's high standards. Good timing with a film theme release better than the original series run.

There should be no need for a remake (not even sure if that would be possible) as there are so many of these around the globe in a range of conditions. Good original ones must be rare and restored ones play well but will have many replacement parts which is what you would expect. Considering that there is not much difference in reality from a game play viewpoint the Gold and the standard do feel different. Maybe that is the same for all older pins now as few will truly be original like a new pin feels today.

Addams Family is a good fun first pin for anyone who is new to this and even better if you can get a good one at a good price. Easy to shop out and easy to sell on also.

The first time I played Medieval Madness I knew it was special, I dont know why specifically, as a list of ratings but I can say that the formula works. Not many pins get remade but this one has and this must be in recognition of it being a classic. As I type, this game is over 20 years old, I am lucky as I own one of these pins as an original. So good they remade it, how often do you hear that.

The only negative I can think of is the back glass being a bit dull on the lighting front. Apart from that, everything else is the pinnacle of pinball. This truly is a great game, easy to play on for the novice, low scoring at times, but when you get into the game it is really good. I am not an expert at pins, take a more positive view than negative (glass half full rather than half empty) and my formative years were spent playing pins in the 70's, 80's and 90's so this game is the king of pins from a point in time as I experienced the evolution of this .

I am sure that as time goes by pins and pin technology will become more complex and maybe even more wonderful. Some of the JJP machines clearly take the game into a new direction. But from a fun and wow perspective Medieval Madness 1997 is a fantastic game. As for anyone who has purchased a remake, I cant fault them and good for them and the team that decided to make even more of these special machines.

I don't profess to be a pinball expert of any kind, but I was lucky enough to see pinball's evolution over 5 decades, so I feel I can say that Medieval Madness has stood the test of time and truly is a classic machine.
