Not a Pin Owner Yet...

Hi, my name is Jon and I am looking for my first pinball machine. I've just moved into a house that has space for a game room and I'd like to start with a pinball machine for Christmas. I have teenagers who need to get off the XBox and into something more present and fun. We spent a week in Long Beach, WA, and the most fun we had together was when we found the little arcade downtown and played the Ghostbusters Pinball Machine and the Ms PacMan/Galaxy Arcade games.  I decided then that when given the chance, I wanted to create a space in our new house where we could come together as a family around a fun and energizing game...not just a passive TV screen with controllers.
I'm new to all of the pin protocols and shopping for a machine is harder when you don't really know what you want.  I'd love to get some tips on how to pick the right machine for the right price. I am kind of interested in Iron Man. (What's the difference between the different versions? How does transportation/delivery work? What do you look for from a seller across country? How can you tell if a machine is quality?). I am sure I will learn over time, and look forward to gaining expertise as I develop my game room at home!  I'm trying to have a machine by Christmas, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The postscript to my story is that I've now purchased an Iron Man VE and am waiting for shipment. My experience working w fellow pinball enthusiasts has been extremely helpful. I will favorably rate the seller when I have played my first game at home and keep you all posted when I achieve a brag-worthy high score!
