At the time of writing this review, I am currently basing my opinions on software version 1.16. Also, I am reviewing the Master of Puppets LE machine, so my opinions on the art package may be biased.

First off, wow! What an amazing entry from Stern. I didn't think they "had it in them" to create a game that is as timeless as Metallica. Hats off to Stern for FINALLY shifting to hand-drawn playfield artwork. The art package is absolutely stellar on Metallica, without a doubt Stern's finest. The cabinet artwork and backglass are also absolutely amazing, I couldn't be happier with the Master of Puppets theme (my favorite Metallica album).

The awesome-ness doesn't stop there however. John Borg and Lyman Sheets have put together an AMAZING playfield package. The shots have something for everyone. Some are easy to hit on demand for the average player, some shots are so tough even the most seasoned veteran will struggle from time to time. The flow is incredible! I can't recall a game that returns the balls from ramp to outlane as fast as metallica does.

The inline drop targets are incredible, such a satisfying feature to interact with. The "sparky" electric toy chair is really amazing. The voice acting (voice of the Metalocolypse cartoon) is perfect for Sparky (and the snake). They are just annoying enough that you WANT to blast them with a pinball! When you finally achieve multiball, you are treated with arguably the best light-show in pinball history!

Which brings me to my next point, the LED lighting! I have always traditionally been a WMS/BLY guy, and shyed away from Sterns. I have never been a fan of LED lights in games that were not designed for them. Metallica WAS designed for LED lights, and it shows! The tri-colored GI lighting is breath taking. When the entire field turns 100% red or 100% blue, its really really cool! The LED flashers are insane too! Word of warning- don't play in a dark dark room, the lights may cause sun-spots lol.

The toys, especially in the LE/Prem model are outstanding! I absolutely love Sparky, the hammer, the grave markers and the snake. Sparky and the snake are easily the most innovative / well executed toys in recent pinball history (possibly all time?) The snake-jaw "drop target" adds an awesome element of skill, especially when dealing with "snake lock" during multi ball.

Finally, the audio selection and software are SPOT ON for this game. While its still in its early stages (3rd revision at the time of writing), it is still an amazing experience. Coming soon are the band member modes, crank it up mode and end of the line. Thats SIX new "modes" in an already feature packed game. Once fully implemented, Metallica will have one of the deepest rule sets to date (if not the deepest). Lyman has already added TONS of hidden jackpots, combos and hurry up shots, with more to come. Its already an excellent piece of software with more to come. The jukebox mode (as debuted in AC/DC) is present with basically the "perfect" selection of Metallica #1 singles.

If you can afford it, buy it. If you see it on location, play it. If you know someone who owns one, go play theirs. Whatever you do, make sure to check out Metallica ASAP, you will not be disappointing!!!
