This is my second review of this game, and I must admit that it took a while for this game to sink in for me. The first several times I had the opportunity to play it, I just didn't feel like the code and gameplay were straight forward enough, and I was getting bad drains from the bell and TNT bank shots.
Forward to today: A friend of mine purchased the Premium edition a few weeks ago, and I got to put about 100 plays on it last weekend. Totally changed my opinion of the game! First off, he knows how to set up a pin.. it was set a little steeper than what you would set it up from the factory (bubble in dead center to just above dead center), black flipper rubbers for more grip, and a nicely waxed playfield.
After about 10 more games and the time it took me to get used to this game, I was hooked. AC/DC is not a traditional pin with a traditional theme, so once you accept that and focus on it being a pure pinball machine with a music theme, it just clicks. The modes are well thought out, and I liked being able to pick a song and focus on an area to shoot at. The game keeps you on edge and requires super-focus to keep the ball in play, no time to sit back while its going into a mode. Even when the cannon loads, you need to pay attention to the jackpot values to know whether it's worth the risk to shoot the target bank!
I left my friends house wanting an AC/DC LE or Premium, but we have an agreement.. I'll keep my X-men LE, he keeps his AC/DC premium so we can play each others machine and not duplicate titles. Seems like a win/win.
And to justify my rating, here's a little more breakdown-
Artwork- Some of the best in pinball. Flames, LED's, and tasteful AC/DC representations make this awesome. If I had the premium, I would prefer the LTBR glass. But certainly not worthy of bringing the artwork package rating down.
Sounds and music- Again, amazing integration of AC/DC related sounds (bell, "FIGHT!", guitar riffs, etc.) while the 12" subwoofer delivers some kick ass sound. The modes all have killer mode specific sounds, such as the train, bell, car, spinner, etc, all very well integrated and thought out.
Other aspects-
Game Lighting- one of the prettiest in pinball, the color changing LED's for the modes and red/hell theme is very pleasing to the eye, so much that it makes older games seem OLD.
Lastability- Tough game with enough to keep you coming back.. and the occasional breakout game shows me that this would be a long term keeper if I got one. I'm planning on snagging my friends game when he wants to get rid of it :)
Theming- AC/DC is the perfect fit for this game. Almost hard to explain, but it just works! Deep enough music catalog of great songs that get your adrenaline pumping.
Fun- Loads of fun. Even non-pinball people couldn't stay away from this one.
