I really love the theme of this game. Starship Troopers was an awesome movie & it's an awesome pin!
I really like that there are different phases of the game where you're shooting for different targets. Some games are set up where the only way to get a good amount of points is to shoot a ramp over and over again. This is not one of those games. You have to modify your gameplay to shoot for different targets depending on the point you're at in the game. It can be frustrating if you can't hit the targets that you need to in order to advance the game but very satisfying when you are able to hit those targets.
The multiball has the potential to net you a lot of points but I personally don't really like it because the big points on multiball are for the ramps & it's very difficult to shoot ramps when you have 4 balls on the playfield at one time. The good thing is that once you lose all your balls & multiball is over, gameplay reverts to normal & you can go back to shooting for specific targets to advance the gameplay.
I'll forgive this machine for the fact that it has mono sound 10 years after stereo sound was introduced to pins because it is so much fun to play. I could spend hours and hours on this pin. I'd move this one up in the rankings of top pins if I could.

I just got the game and so far I love it. It's a lot of fun. It's pretty easy to figure out the game and how to play. 4 ball multi ball, and they also have one or two other different multi ball game action. Very fun. I'll add more details when I play for a few weeks. Now, it's still pretty new to me. Great game, and great price.

Ok... so if you can get beyond the theme, you'll be fine. I like the comic book, and well.... er... the movie was alright. So I love the pin.

Easy to understand rules. Anyone can get how to play. That says a lot. Not a lot of pins are as approachable. Having said that... if you love how depthy the rules are for the Hobbit, you are going to get board.

Had it as a winter project as I could pick up one at a decent price. Fun to play for short period but got bored to soon. Just didn't do it for me :(

SST has great flow and plays fast. Multiballs are where it shines. The third flipper actually becomes more and more useful and fun over time. A great first pin to own! The only real negative is the sound - just not very good quality.

Great underrated game with really good flow. Relatively simple fan layout. Quality wise, these older Sega games havent aged as well as Bally/Williams games of the same era, so needs to be tweaked to be a good player. If you want to know how your new Stern will look and feel in 20 years, this is it.

Such an underrated game. I can play this game for hours. I think the movie is as underrated as this machine.

This game is pure fun. You are in the middle of war against the bugs! This game takes you there if you a fan of the movie. Challenging game that requires real skill and strategy to get high scores. I like that you don't get lost with what you have to do like in some other games.

3rd flipper makes certain shots that can't easily be had with the right flipper.

Psychic video mode is fun when you get a match!

Brain bug delivers the goods!

A keeper!

Game is a lot of fun. Found when we first played it that multi-ball was to easy and happened way to much so turned up the difficulty and it really made the game more enjoyable. The artwork is cheesy but I feel it fits the theme as the movie was cheesy too. :P The third flipper really adds a nice touch to the game and learning how to use two flippers with one hand can be challenging.

One thing I didn't like is how dark the lower half of the playfield was. They did a good job getting the upper area lit but did nothing for the lower. I have already done a mod to take care of that. Also the sound is terrible. I can easily tell it only has one speaker in the back box. That is one of the mods I will be doing in the near future. Have to have that right channel put in.

This is a game I could see keeping awhile and later wanting to trade or sell it but this was actually a purchase for my wife so I don't know if it will ever leave our home, it's not my choice. :)

Started out to be a fun game. Rules are challenging and fun. The sound is was ruined this game for me. The alien screeches drove me absolutely crazy after a short time, so I sold it. Theme is cool, and the artwork is decent. Fun game to play if you play with the volume off, but what fun is that.

Game has very nice flow. Not a huge fan of the artwork. All the toys are a little much. However has great sounds and overall a fun pin to play. Brain bug is a nice touch.

Wow. This game is good. Don't let the play field deceive you. The shots are fun and somewhat difficult. not to mention that the mini flipper dynamic is superb. Great sound package, fun to play, great game.

Not my favorite Sega. I find that it gets a bit boring...plus the music is awful and it never lets down...just a constant loop. Animations are really good for the time period, but thats about it for me.

Music is poor, sound effects become grating. Audio quality is rough. PF art is hideous. Not a fan at all. This game is like faux attack from mars.

Game is fast playing and a challenge to beat it. Lots of various multi-ball scenarios, straight forward rule set with some buried surprises and rewards. Good sounds and solid representation of the movie....makes you want to go back and watch the film. You don't have to love the movie to want to play this one, but it does add to it if you already love the film. It's not easy to beat, and that is why it is a good add to the collection. 3rd flipper adds to the value of targets hit and it helps to use it to advance the planets. Contrary to some comments, I liked the music. Solid feel all around and powerful flippers. Can set up easier or more difficult with 3 to 5 balls per game for some flexibility in the game and to help out the younger players that aren't used to a faster machine. Would be nice if they would have included stereo speakers...they can be modded in, but shouldn't have to be.

The lower playfield, three flipper design is interesting and almost works in regard to the playfield layout. But the game overall is a but shallow with only so much to do during gameplay. Perhaps when playing more in the future I will discover more.

Fun game, but not a keeper. Too much multi-ball for me.

I really like this game! People diss Sega all the time, but this game is fantastic. No, it's not the greatest theme (unless you dug the movie), but it works and works well! The game has a great, higher quality feel to it, the shots are really well-thought out (and fun to make!), and it's got a lot of humor. This game is a hidden gem! Don't judge a book by its cover.

Seems like the consensus on sega pins is very negative, but all the ones i've played (including starship troopers) are pretty darn good fun.

Splat bugs. That's the first thing you want to do when playing this machine, and you keep getting back to do it. It is a surprisingly fun machine to play, and I'm wondering why it is so low in the ranking. Basically, you kill four types of alien bugs on different planets. You do this by hitting various targets spread around the playfield. Each type of bug has its own colour, and the amount of each type bugs still to be splatted is shown on four 7-segment displays on the playfield. After each planet you might need to capture a huge brainbug that pops out of the plafield. There's also a bug you have to hit and push back to reveal a target hole that starts a multiball. The game has awesome lighting flashers and lots of toys. The best feature might be that it has three flippers at the bottom; two normal sized ones, and one extra at the left side. This little flipper takes some getting used to, but once you get the hacg of it it is a very nifty feature, and its use is awarded extra points. The sound (not stereo) and playfield art could have been better, but for anyone who has seen the film, it's all worth it!

I'm really not a Sega fan, but I enjoy this game a lot. Callouts, tasks are quite fun.

This is something I'd enjoy having in my collection.
