This is the third Stern Solid State pinball Machine and the best remembered of the three due to it’s huge sales numbers.
Their first solid state game, “Pinball” by Stern, was incredibly expensive to make, program, and design. The second, “Stingray”, used the exact same game rom and switch count to cut costs, although they moved everything around on a new playfield design.
Sales numbers were satisfactory, but not great, for numerous obvious reasons.
The third game in development was Stars, and further cost reduction was paramount.
Two spinners, a pair of three bank drop targets, five stand up targets, and only one pop bumper!
Gone were rollovers, dual saucers, triple pop bumpers and so on from Pinball and Stingray.
How could that possibly be fun?
Well, they hired Steve Kirk!
The goal is to please the customer and remove or reduce the frustrations, and expenses, found on other pinball machines of the time.
Gameplay was increased by reducing ball outlane drains and adding the kirkpost between the flippers, and there’s an easy unblocked shot on both sides of the playfield that go straight back up to the top, making for very fast and easy gameplay.
Everyone likes fast and easy!
Yeah. I went there. Make your own joke. It was the 1970s after all.
Cheap and cheerful fun for the customer equals success and profits. Low maintenance means loyal happy vendors. All of this adds up to an amazing 5,127 units sold. Compare that to Pinball (1,654) and Stingray (3,006), which means Stars outsold them both combined, by 467 units.
That also means math is easy with a calculator.

Most of my reviews focus on value for money and gameplay quality. At the price Stars currently sells for and it’s total lack of rarity, combined with the rare need for maintenance and cheap upkeep costs, then throw in the simple, easy, and fun gameplay factor, and you have probably the best first pinball I could possibly recommend.
That was a run on sentence!
The best part is it doesn’t get old, because it already is quite old.
Stale. That’s a better word, even though it’s not edible.
Many people say that if they get near a Stars, they will play for hours. I totally agree!
Admittedly, If I had the space and money, I would have all three of the first solid state Stern machines, but I have neither.
Time to irritate people with my alliteration!
In Summary, Stars is a successful seventies solid state Stern that succeeded the second game, Stingray, in the series. Some say it sold so strongly that it saved Sam Stern several years of strife and struggle when it suddenly started sharply shifting units and surpassing sales expectations.
Now go buy one. It’s a fun game, you aren’t going to lose money on it, and if you love pinball, you certainly won’t regret it!

Played at Pinball Republic, London.

A very tough solid state game mascarading as a electromagnetic pin.

Unlike other Sterns of this era, such as Nine Ball or Meteor, the central rubber post doesn’t fill the flipper gap sufficiently to stop the ball - so lots, and lots of drains, especially with the all-important drop targets towards the centre and edges of the playfield. The slingshots on the one I played were super-bouncy.

The chimes are unbelievably annoying. A nostalgia trip no one wanted to take.

One of the best of the Stern electronics era. Designed by the enigmatic genius Steve Kirk, Stars has a great layout and ruleset for its time. The art on the playfield is nice, but the cabinet is just so so, and the backglass is borderline bad. I love the electric chimes for this game, and it's hard to stop playing once you start. Definitely keeps you coming back for more.

STARS, what an amazing classic game, Stars is hard as hell and well give alot of house balls, but it well always keep you coming back for more. I personally love having the Setting enabled for Roving Special shot after all 5 stars have been lit.

I really enjoy the chime sounds from this game, A great Solid State with chimes!

I don't know what it is about Stars, but its one of my favorite early solid state games. Simple yet difficult. It's a game that always gets played when people come over. It's like the great equalizer for all skill levels

This is simply a fun game. I found myself always wanting one more right after my last drain. Chasing stars and bashing drop targeta for bonuses. This is quenticential pinball of its time. I understand why everyon loves this at tournament's . It has difficulty, it ls dynamoc, it has charm whay is not to love.

I'll miss having this in my lineup

Stars is an excellent game if you like brutal, fast and unforgiving play. The rules are straightforward, hit the standups to light stars or drop the targets. Rip the spinner!

This may be my favorite SS. Make sure you set the dip switches so you can go for the 100k special. I love that there are different scoring strategies and both are equally viable.

I currently have Stars here at the house and it's fun, BUT it is a very hard machine to play. The ball LOVES to drain, but when you get that great game going, the machine tends to keep the ball away from the drains.

I have over 3000 games on mine in the 1 1/2 years of owning it.

Recently picked up a STARS as my earliest solid state and it is an absolute blast! The chimes are well integrated and sound great when tuned. The scoring logic on this game makes it lots of fun. I really like that there are 2 strategies that can be utilized on this game, hunting down the 5 stars and blasting the right spinner or going after the drop targets. This is a quick game that is great for visiting casuals. I have STARS next to Godzilla Premium and when I have non pinheads over, they will always play a game of Godzilla but multiple on Stars as the rules are understandable and the game is fair. The pop bumper adds quite a bit of randomness, and I really like that one of the STARS targets is only accessible from a pop bumper deflection. The machine is mechanically and logically pretty simple, and drop in board parts are readily available if you don't have advanced repair skills. The only issue I have had on mine were related to the rectifier board (you can buy a plug and play new replacement one for $60), ancient displays (you can buy drop in replacements for $50 each) and flakey light sockets (can be easily replaced with basic soldering skills for about $1 as needed. Overall I am very happy with my STARS. I do not think it is a forever pin for me (I rotate pins alot) but it is tons of fun and I would recommend it to anyone as a first budget pin, or as a great pin to mix it up for a hardcore Modern Stern guy.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Tough to dial in, but when set up properly, this is about as good as pinball gets.

Game even has optional settings to control the rules for very competitive play. Multiple strategies. Beautiful game in and out, even the 4 tone chimes add that nostalgia coupled with variation to make a little tune.

I love sterns from the 80's. This is got to be one of the best if not the hardest, at least to get the roving star for the (on mine) 50k bonus shot.
Some games last a few minutes others more, however this is my go to game for a quick spin. The new games are great, but some woundn't stack up against this.
Cracker of a game.

Nice older SS machine. I enjoyed the spinners, targets, and drop targets, which are always nice in the classic SS machines. This seems simple, but was still a challenge. Nice playfield art, but I think the backglass could have been much better.

I think I've owned this long enough now to write a balanced review.

Stern Stars is a classic, simplistic yet incredibly challenging pin. Always feeling like you're a shot or two from maxing your spinners, only to cop a brutal outlane drain. But you go back for more and more. Huge replay ability on this one which is 100% necessary, as house balls are rife.

Love the chimes, the artwork is gorgeous and ripping the spinners never get old.

A great classic stern, brutal to play but rewarding to blow up.
Simple rules hit stars, get special, rip spinner. Easier said than done. A huge flipper gap, brutal out lanes, and high slings make this a punishing yet rewarding early solid state and great tournament game.

For the age of the game and as simple as the layout is this one keeps you coming back for more. This game will help improve your skills for other machines. Getting all 5 stars to light on a single ball makes it a challenge.

Love the Classic Sterns.
Stars has a nice combination of drop targets, stand up targets, and spinners -- the rules are so simple yet the game can be quite challenging. I like the chimes vs. electronic sounds with this game. Playfield art is very nice but I could do with a different backglass. Overall a fun game that I keep going back to for some good old fashioned pinball.

My very first pinball machine that got me hooked on the hobby. Very simple and basic, but challenging to hit your shots consistently and nothing beats the classic sounds of the chimes.

This is an early solid state, late chime box game. In some ways this is my most difficult pin. I love this game. It is a simple rule set, so great for when non-pinners come over. It is really popular with with experts too. You need to drop either set of drop targets to get the double & triple bonus going & then drop all 6 for the extra ball. Hit all 5 stars to get the moving bonus lit. For its age, I highly recommend playing it. The sounds from the chime box are music to my ears.

Stars is an excellent game that's really held up well over the years. I go long enough between stints playing it that I tend to forget it has a nice progressive points scheme, where you alternate hitting targets to get additional points on the spinners, bonus X for completing a bank, and eventually a special light for completing both banks (available at a standup). It has only a single bumper, but it's got a lot of kinetic action for its placement. There are three overlapping arcs/parabolas that play dominantly, and you can if you want make almost every shot from both flippers, although it has the typical crossover pattern for most shots. The left spinner is harder, hidden up beyond the banks, but isn't impossible. In general it's got a lovely open playfield.

The artwork also is pretty cool; it's a generic space scene, with a kind of SST like rocket on the backglass, and spacey stuff on both the cabinet sides and playfield. There isn't a huge incorporation of space sounds and a "story" on the playfield, though.

The one caveat is that there's no blinking indicator for which player is up, and this is one of those odd machines with the player scores not in left to right top to bottom order -- it goes up from bottom left and then down to the right. In tournament or multiplayer games, make sure you keep track of who's shooting!

This game is absolutely brutal and unforgiving. It boasts gigantic slingshots that seem to put a mile between the flipper and the nearest starred standup target or spinner, and the ball will either ricochet between those two for a short eternity or come screaming straight down the middle, center post be darned. This may not sound like a promising description for a pinball machine; at first, I couldn't stand it. But, if you like a little challenge with your pinball, this game is perfect - the spinners are satisfying to hit, and are most so when you have managed to light the starred inserts on the right spinner through the standup targets. The drop targets are less rewarding and only slightly less risky, but they do provide an alternate method to getting points. The playfield seems simple with the two banks of drop targets, two spinners, pop bumper, and scattered standups, but the apparent sparseness belies an engaging, engrossing machine - it's so addictive to play, inspires such an obsession to execute a good score, that it doesn't need many whistles or bells. A great game.
