I personally think this is a beautiful machine and I love the widebody design. Backglass is gorgeous and I’d love to own one. Unfortunately, the prices are so out of whack that I never could, but I’ll always like this game.

Part of the trio infernale - Black Hole, Haunted House and Spirit. What a beauty!
Hypnotic lightshow with spinning disc and a lot to shoot for. Great and rare game.

I really enjoyed the little time I had to be able to play this game.

I would rank this as my second favorite System 80 game, with Black Hole taking the lead by a slim margin.

The layout of the lower playfield is awesome. Having the inlanes be an actual shot is awesome, and the ability to save yourself on outlane drains is also fun, albeit a bit too easy.

There are a lot of flippers but they each have their own shots and feel like they have a purpose. Unlike a lot of extra flippers during this time.

It is a shame they made so few of this title. I personally could never justify that price, but it is amazing, those System 80 wide body games have so much charm and I could easily see why other people would be willing to pay a lot given they have a large collection.

This is a rare game with gorgeous artwork. As a result, they cost a ton for a pin of the era. Is it worth it? For me, I would have to say no...although it is an incredibly cool game. I just think of the other pins you could get for $7500. If you ever have a chance to play it, however, jump on it because you may never have another opportunity.

First a minor disclaimer. I've only ever played Spirit for 30 minutes. And it was just 2 games. But, it was two LONG, LONG games. I do hope to play spirit more in the future. And if my thoughts change. I will edit this review. I don't think they will...

What I like about this machine.
The backglass is amazing, love that swirling lights on it. The cab also is a cool looking cab and also remember this time and era.So this cab really does further stand out when you take that into consideration as well, and the playfrield art is good as well. It further ties and connects all the art from cabinet, playfield and backglass together. Just really well themed.

The layout is an interesting and unique one. Lots of flippers, and you got an upper playfield. Also, really like the ramp that can raise as well. Game is a widebody. And it has a lot going on.

However, because of all the areas. I feel your really just try to get the ball into position. Then with that areas flipper you hit the one or two shots you can with that flipper. Not a whole lot of variety in what you can shoot for. Each flipper only has a few choices. Just how I felt.

I won't lie and profess I really understand the rules. They're seem okay and get the job done. Its an early 80s solid state. So basic rules and they hold up.
Game is decent enough fun to shoot as well...
But, what I don't like about this pin. Its really hard to drain out of this one. You get the extra flippers on each outlane powered by their own buttons. Because of this I was able to save my ball quite often. You really almost don't have to worry about the side to side motion on this game. Because, if it goes into the outlanes, you probably can save it.

With that being said, there is a lot of side to side from the slings, and it really slows the game down. Just really slow. Sometimes I waited 20-30 seconds just to get my flipper on it. Again, no real danger. Just a lot of waiting.
I like this game. I do. But, I think its lastability isn't the greatest. I know I'd get bored of it after 1-2 plays tops... It looks amazing. I like the sounds on it. But, it really just isn't the most exciting game to play. Would I want one in my collection. Not at the current prices for it.
My thoughts are. If I find it in the wild. I'll play on it. But, if there is a line or a wait. I'll hope on a different pin.

An innovative layout with a healthy variety of shots. The pin I played was not steep, so gameplay was slow and floaty. Ball times are super long if you don't flub the second pair of flippers. A cool widebody, play it if you can find one.

First thing that catches your attention about this game is the backglass -- Beautiful!
Gameplay is good. Drop targets, an upper playfield, extra outlane flippers (if you can activate them!), mini-orbit. . . . definitely takes some time playing to get a feel for shots and goals. To me the game did play on the slow side and it took a perfect shot to reach the upper playfield. Flippers felt a bit soft on my example.
Very happy to get to play this unusual game, not sure I would chase one down to own for the values they seem to bring but I'd gladly put more plays on one!

Artwork is ahead of its time but the 6 flipper and play field layout just feels so wrong that why not many games were made

Beautiful game in every aspect. Way ahead of its time in terms of shots and rules. Great sounds.

One of the dumbest things I've done is sell mine before I learned to appreciate it.

Spirit is amazing in every way shape and fashion. Some of the best artwork ever. Gameplay makes for a very replayable game. Love it, never pass up a chance to play one.

Playing Spirit is an ethereal experience. The beautiful backglass draws you in and the multitude of satisfying shots coupled with an entertaining ruleset keeps you playing. Armed with one of the best sound packages Gottlieb has to offer, the journey to racking up points can be a spine-tingling experience - the sounds accompanying an open stargate (not the pyramid), for instance, will give you chills. It even has a unique slam tilt sound!

Nearly every shot on this game is fun to aim for. The flippers in the outlane offer a unique shot at the standups to start multiball (though shatzing will also do); the bank of targets next to the ramp allow for, when down, a "peekaboo" shot underneath the ramp; the saucers for multiball lead to a variety of places to aim. The game is jam-packed with things to do, and you've got six flippers to do things with.

Spirit is engaging and fun. It's a wonderful game to play!

I have wanted to get around to rating this game for a while now.

The fourth best Gottlieb Star System 80 game behind (in order) Black Hole, Haunted House, and Krull.
Devil's Dare is *really* close in terms of over quality.
I mean *really* close.
Play more Gottlieb Star System 80s folks!
Gottlieb Circus, I DO NOT count in this listing, as it is a special case based on its design and was the breakthrough start of the series with some differences of the rest of the SS80 games.

Another example of new collectors being led astray over hype based on rarity.
Exceeding overpriced based on game quality for features.

Most people that have played the machine remember it predominantly for the Hypnotic backglass image with the rotating lights.
Even better in effects than Black Hole.

Double level playfield with variety of lightning bolt hand drawn artwork, target, and ramp design is very close in feel to Black Knight.
As a machine it plays solid and the drop targets feel satisfying with a good variety of sounds and effects.
Cabinet artwork is above average.
As stated the backglass is a strong 9 out of 10.

Its rarity makes it desirable for collectors.
Playability makes it well above average as an overall pinball machine design of the era.
Welcome to pinball collecting folks were hype and artwork does not make a great game.
Surprise!
If you want to pay nearly 10 grand for games that are close to 40 years old (one on Ebay recently was listed for $14k, WTF Batman! *Edit: Seller decided to finally come back down to planet Earth finally*), I have "yellow snow" I can sell you in the winter.
If you want a cup in the summer the snow cone maker work is extra.
Just ask, I will throw in the cup for free.

I own Black Hole, love Haunted House, and was so pumped to play this game....but was ultimately disappointed. Everyone raves about how great of a game Spirit is, and that it's the best of the Gottlieb "monster" games from that era. Maybe I need more time on this deck, but I gotta tell you that Black Hole is still my fav (perhaps this game has a slight edge over HH, but not much)!

Trudeau's 2nd game and it shows. It honestly feels like randomly placed shots all over the place with no real feeling of flow. While I dig the mini-flippers in the outlanes, I just couldn't get into this game. If it were cheaper, sure grab one. But as it stands, they go for such ridiculous prices here in the US (most of these games went overseas). Decent background sounds, but nothing great. The artwork? Okay, it is a beautiful game (as all the "monster" games had). Decent but not great IMO.

For my money, I'd rather play a brutally fast and furious game of Black Hole!

My father had this in our basement since I was a kid, until I was ~14 it was the only machine I'd ever played, and my time on it still eclipses all other games I own by an order of magnitude. It's also still my favorite of the lot, and I'm not sure if there's any game out there I'd be willing to trade it for, even plus cash. It's really that good. Excellent sound effects, especially the background, excellent not-wide-open layout, cool outlanes. My only complaint is that there's nothing to do in multiball.

Widebody game that is completely stuffed with interesting things to shoot for. The downside is that this leads to excessively long ball times.

The backglass is amazing and one of the best ever designed.

Amazing PF shot map. Very original, very diverse and well thought. The mini-flippers are really cool.

2nd best sys80 made after Black Hole (I'm not a HH fan).
The game has something like 19 shots in it. I think it's the most I've ever recorded.
Backglass is second to none, and the bass coming out of the stock speakers is crushing and feels good.
Plays very well, and you keep coming back for more.
I'd love to have one in my collection if I could hold 20, it would make the "top 20 1980's machines"...

The Spirit is a great game to play, when you can find one. Fortunately, I've got a friend who has a mint copy that plays like a champ. It sits next to his cherry Krull.

The Pros:
The PF design is inspired, from top to bottom. The shots, the shots, the shots. They are everywhere and you need to be on your game to take advantage of them all. Some shots are short, some require tight aim from the bottom to the top of the pf. The small flipper is well utilized and the small side flippers save the ball AND have a shot to the targets AT THE TOP OF THE INSIDE OF THE SLINGSHOTS. It boggles the mind...truly. Multiball requires you to shoot all over up and down and to the side around the PF.

The Cons:
I can't afford one even if I was able to find one up for sale.

Takeaway:
A very fine game. Go play one whenever you can and see if the owner will take a straight trade your MM and your CC.

Update:
The shots are super crazy on this game. Multiball is where it is at and playing it well is the key to big scores. Few things are more deflating in pinball than to see 2 locked balls head to the trough after you fail to lock the third ball. The secondary flippers can negate the outlanes and in one case I have seen the 1 way gate removed to keep the ball from becoming a gimme back into play. Why bang back and death save when you have those secondary flipper saves? The upper playfield is great and the exits from the top and the bottom are DANGEROUS! Is this the best system 80 game ever made? I dont know... but the way this game feels, it feels like none other and that in itself is of great value to a pinball player and collector. Now, if it would just keep on working...

Update v.2:
Learn to use the "star gate" targets and upper 270 degree loop shot to lift the center ramp to the upper playfield to get to the lock saucer up there to start multiball more easily. It's not just locking 3 saucers, you have more choices than that and using them all is the key to the winning scores here. IF you can get to the upper saucer through the "S" guides to the top saucer. great! But once I started the star gate strategy, I'd take it on a lucky shot, and ignore it most other times. Just lock one or two balls (or not even one lock) and star gate into 2 or three ball multiball. Keep it up. Stay in multiball for big scores and safety. Competitive players will find this the best risk/reward strategy on this game. The B-A and L-K targets require sniper aim and the L-L targets can be reached with a solid shot up the center ramp. This layout is like some of the older Stern V.1 games where the game is wider, but it is also longer. Keeping standard pinball playfield proportions means that this design essentially "shrinks" the pinball to a smaller size on a larger playfield. This is how you make room for those wacky inlane Shatz-shots! Can Spirit get boring? It can, but a well tuned version of this game will always be challenging.

Looking for a direct pipeline to 1982? Check out Spirit!

I was very surprised by this machine. 6 flippers! a very unique design. A rare find. A slow playing game with a playfield way before it's time.
I'm not one who really likes many games made before 1991 but this is an exception. A pinball players pinball machine. This machine gives you a great feeling just walking up to it.
