Played at the Dutch Pinball Museum.

This is apparently a rare pin and, frankly, this is a good thing. The backglass is at least as blurred as Hollywood Heat. It has the gimmick of four flippers arranged in two pairs, with a huge hole around the middle (on the ropes). The multi-flipper arrangement is difficult to get the hang of and creates as many opportunities for draining as 1950s EMs, which are far too luck-based to be fun. As such, the best technique seems to be to try to keep the ball in play in the upper playfield.

It does feature a very loud ‘end of round’ bell noise, which was fun in the Dutch Pinball Museum, but would be significantly less fun in a home collection in a fifteenth floor flat with bad-tempered neighbours.

The good:
- The theme is consistent.
- The four flipper layout at the bottom is fairly unique, if you like quirky design features.

The bad (where do I start?):
- Backglass is terrible, Rocky looks like he’s been melted.
- Clunky, clunky, clunky. There is absolutely no flow to this game.
- Due to the flipper layout it is often very difficult to clear the ball away, 8/10 I drain in this frustrating way. The other 2/10 is from the ball going down the channel in the middle but then taking an unlucky bounce to either side.
- The fifth flipper barely gets any action due to being substantially shielded by other playfield parts. It just feels like a random addition for the sake of it rather than actually adding anything to the game.

I’m afraid to say that for me, this game is a real stinker.

New owner-just getting into it. Wow-addicting-tough to get ROUNDS- tougher to get big scores. Frustratingly demanding- thus as Steve Richie says " play better."
Overall a super game to keep going for years.

Consider this review as incomplete as I need more plays on this to get a better feel. I'm so used to my Quartette (1952 Gottlieb) that also has a set of flippers on each side, but those work in a way that feels more natural or I'm just plain used to by now, which is left button flips both L/R on the left pair, right button for right pair. Rocky has left button flips left flippers on both pairs, right button for right flippers. So I'm usually just flailing away at Rocky, can't get my brain to undo what it knows from Quartette, and it plays like a clunky mess. And it's not like I have a lot of opportunities to play this anyway, being something of a rare game by this point. But even when I do get locked in for a bit, I just don't like Rocky's layout. That alleyway leading to the center drain is just unnecessary, and it honestly feels like one of the sparsest widebodies I've ever played.

The art is what you'd expect, you can't go crazy with any of these big media properties. The Rocky pinball machine that a drunk and bitter Paulie throws a pint of J&B into during that great opening Rocky III scene is not the same as this one, although it's in an arcade with many real world pins and video games, and situated between Paragon and Playboy!

Nostalgia is a big factor in my enjoyment of this game. It's been in my collection for about 15 years. I don't play it often, but I'll never get rid or it. Sometimes I like to just admire it, knowing how rare it is. It's pretty simple, but it is fun to play.

Rock was not the game I thought it would be. It was better.

The Pros:
Lots of drops and two orbits that require solid shots from each of the right hand flippers on the two sets of bats on this deck. The 10 count sequence is cool and requires that you use all 5 flippers to get your needed shots. Scoring the special when your ball is on the right hand side of the table takes a new approach to playing pinball. Getting the ball to the left side flippers so you can shoot the right orbit to the special saucer is tough and adds a new meaning to the term "flipper pass".

The Cons:
The art on the BG is muddy. Sly looks like he's made out of play-doh. This game has GOT to have fresh rubbers, snappy slings and strong flippers or it gets old quick.

The Takeaway:
A much better game than one would initially think. John Trudeau made a really good design with this table and license.

A split decision on this one. It has a unique layout with 4 flippers for the lower left & right areas.
These areas seemed too contained & using the flippers often did not feel right and caused many drains.
Good challenge though and it's cool when you won a round and a bell would ring.

Attractive design, a piece of history.
