Casual Metallica fan, but not a fan of them as a theme.

That being said, this is a fun machine with some great toys. I enjoy the flow and love Sparky.

They did a nice job with the theme..

I knew the game was highly rated, but not being a Metallica fan I didn't give it much thought. But, once I got one, wow! It is a fast and brutal game, lightning fast - but super fun. Thought it may be a pin I would just rotate out after a year, but seems it may be a keeper. The songs grow on you, and match the game well. Great pin.

One of Stern's greatest! The software package along with John Borg's design makes this one special. This was one of John's first fan layout design I believe. It has been so successful that he has used it in many other games (GOTG for example). The Crank It Up mode is so fun. I don't understand why Stern hasn't used this on other new games. To me this sets Metallica apart from all other Pinball machines. I game within a game. The flow is amazing and I love the music. I highly recommend this game. I've owned it twice and only sold it because I want the premium.

I love the theme. You either like or hate the band. This game just never clicked with me. I know how many people love this game. The second time that I have gotten a game only to be disappointed. I really wanted a MET and I got a near-perfect HUO machine. There was almost no honeymoon period for me. I heard others talk about a game feeling like chopping wood and never understood until I had this in the house. It just never felt fun. It was always a chore. One of the quickest games to leave and I don't miss it. For some reason, I still want to like it. I feel like the guy who just doesn't "get it" with this title.

What can I say about Metallica that hasn't been said? Not much. Great pin, loads of fun. Pro might be better than the premium in my opinion, especially with the bell problems the premium is supposed to have. Love the band (some great songs are absent though), love the pin.... Fun for anyone at any skill level, I want this for home one day.

Electrocuting Sparky is such a great way to start a multi ball!

Con:
Artwork is meh not my thing, the only drawback. Wish there was a version that was a little dialed down.... Its just so busy everywhere.

Edit:. I bought a premium of this one and it's so epic. I'm not a huge Metallica fan even

Maybe a little biased as this is my first pinball machine owned and that I have put a considerable amount of time on compared to any other machine.

Toys - A+ (Sparky)
Music - A+
Shots - A
Rules - B (Feel like I keep doing the same thing over and over, but it still is fun)
Art - B
Theme - A (one of my favorite bands)

Facelift version of the game (With factory led and new SAM backbox) looks very good. Old whitestar version looks really cheap.
Big respect for the band members for the effort of doing the custom callouts and comments.

Art and music is a matter of taste, but I think they did very well. One of the best playfield layouts there is.

"Only" one toy (sparky), but man is it well made.

Another Lyman game with great, deep rules. Fun for people walking up to it for the first time and the season pro. Such a good machine.

Probably one of the greatest games ever. I’m a little biased because I like the band but the shots are fun and the lastability is great. Definitely a good machine to have in someone’s collection.

I've played this pinball at a lot of different locations and I truly have tried to get into it. I've focused on the rules, the gimmicks, the artwork, and just simply can't find the fun factor. All the top 10 games on pinside that I've had the opportunity to play have all lived up to their expectations for me except for this one.

I love Metallica and I love the theme, but the actual gameplay just doesn't get me hooked. I really don't understand why this is ranked so high. I'm not saying it's a terrible pin, but there's so many others that deserve the spot in the top 10 that this one takes.

I finally was able to play a Metallica pro. It's a very good machine, but I did miss the hammer ball-lock feature that the premium has. Metallica premium remains one of my favorite pins, and while the pro is very similar, it doesn't hold up enough for me to feel compelled to continue to play it like the premium does. That said, it's still very fun, it just doesn't have the 'lastability' of the premium (I still have yet to play a LE).

This is one of the best pinball machines Stern ever made, so good that makes any 90s games seem toys. There are 4 multiballs, electric chair, snake, grave marker and coffin. When you hit 15 times each of these, you will get Crank it Up, a mini Wizard mode (to get to the real wizard mode you must get it 5 times). Metallica has EVERYTHING that makes it fun, flow, deep rules, lastability and is also very simple to repair.

Very fun game to play. The artwork is really poor. Porr enough I don't want to play the machine, even though the playability is excellent. Love the music!

John Borg is a workhorse within the pinball designer industry, but his game design decisions never rank at the top of my list. Having said that - I think Metallica is the first GREAT game design of the "Dad Rock Jukebox" theme trend, and it's a testament to his choices that it has felt like such an enjoyable and replayable game for over a decade. Orbits and toy shot are very easy, but everything else is going to test you. Fun DMD animations, callouts, humor and obviously the music. One of the great "house party games" (at least before the prices went astronomical) that could help really make it a fun night for everyone. Appealing to intermediate and seasoned players because it's such a linear climb for scoring, unless you're in some really special modes.

I honestly hope that Stern takes another shot at it and brings it into the "action button" era.

Obviously great music, but for me the gameplay could be much better. Iron Maiden is a better design and more fun.
Update: I purchased a Pro Metallica and got some more hours on the machine and feel compelled to increase my initial rating. For music pins my fav. is still Iron Maiden, but Metallica is a good compliment to it.
Good playfield visibility on the Pro. Update this with 1.8 firmware, LED‘s and a color LCD and this game rocks. Great layout by Borg. My main complaint is the unpredictable ball trajectory once Sparky sends it flying. I‘ve seen prices increase recently on this game, so grab one if you find a good deal.

To give this short review a little extra depth: I’m not a fan of Metallicas style of heavy metal and I also find that the extreme cartoonlike pop-art that covers the cabinet art and backglass rather ugly.

With these things in mind I’m still very much impressed with this game. This playfield design is challenging, fast and offers lots of different rewarding shots. From the bash toy to those awesome inline-drops and some really neat ramps to name the best spots on this playfield. Real entertaining video modes here as well.

Talking strictly gameplay, leaving annoying music and cosmetics aside, this table in my opinion is more interesting and engaging than many other Stern titles close to that production period; Tron, Iron Man, Star Trek, Kiss and Avatar.

I would not consider it a homepin contender for me because of the music and style of this game (also leaving the high price tag outside the equation). But for someone who doesnt mind heavy metal in general as a pinball theme- this would be a great choice for a small home collection.

To be honest- already if youre able to overlook the music/art to some degree, this would be a top title .

A real fun and demanding game !

Butter Ramps, fun bash toy and a killer sound track. I really enjoy playing Metallica.

Lots of people like Dirty Donny's art, but this version of the band isn't for me. Maybe I'm not rock and roll enough, I'm not sure. I like the play field and cabinet, its just the characters on the field and back glass that creepy me out.

I’ve had a MET Pro for a little over 3 months now and I’d seriously consider a Premium. Very fun/balanced pin with some the best art in pinball. Sparky is wonderful. Snake is mean. Crosses are dangerous. Very well designed game.

I have owned a Metallica for 3 years and it has always been fun, but not the most fun game in my collection. Some additional variation to the CIU->EotL strats would be nice but it resolves that well by creating plenty of multiball opportunities along the way.

I believe the PRO is the way to go vs. the LE; there simply is not a who lot different. Added pin stadium and I don't think I'll ever get rid of this game.

Metallica is definitely one of sterns top 2 pins it's really a toss up between this one and Lord of the Rings. Sparky is the best bash toy that has been made even though it's just a bobble head it makes me smile every time I play it.

Metallica is the perfect location pin. It would be my #1 purchase if I were an operator. Popular theme, great flow layout, fun and reactive bash toy, easy rules, solid mech, the list goes on. To me this pin defines the primary modern Stern business objective - create a large number of reasonably costed machines that are easy to pick up and play quickly with limited mech issues - perfect for operator routes and diverse barcades.

The main problem with Metallica is what some others have said... This game eventually feels like "chopping wood" for pinheads. For home use this game would get old very fast unless you have a lot of home parties or want a straightforward skill-practicing pin to put in the reps. For that reason I am somewhat surprised that Metallica is solidly in the top 10, however, good job to Stern overall.
