UPDATE: Exit interview.

I'll be letting this one go in a week. I thought it was a keeper, but it really wasn't. This pin LOOKS like it would have everything I love, but it really suffers in some areas for me.

First, the things I liked better the longer I owned it;

1) The handles. Playing with them ended up being great. After I had it for a few weeks, I never reached for the flipper buttons again. Learning where the secret bonuses were that you score from the thumb buttons added to the fun.

2) The rules. It's a pretty exciting game that, IMO, builds to a crescendo as you get closer to the final modes and multiball. I got the updated rules, and while the creator of those rules did a fantastic job, they just never felt as exciting to play as the original code that has that extra 'something'.

What ended up making it one I could spare:

Ball flow. For a pin that is based on combos, to me, this one just had too many shots that caused the flow of the game to stop. It might be a Nordman thing, as I had to give up my EATPM for the same reason.

The left orbit ended in a sink hole, the right orbit gave a combo opportunity to the upper left flipper, but that ended in either a sink hole at the computer, or a shot around to another kicker saucer. The right ramp would end up at the crane quite often, and hitting the left ramp would quite often re-qualify the crane making the right ramp shot a dead end again. The two shots to the extreme left (car crash and retina scanner) are shots that I just tried to avoid at nearly any cost.

I still think it's a fun game, and I am glad to have owned it, but since I can't keep them all, this one had to go to make some space.

Previous rating:

I've had this one for a week now, so I'm ready to write my review.

Thoughts:

Everything has already been said that needs to be said about the back glass. It's not great, but I don't mind it.

Table flow is why I love pinball, and this machine has a lot of it. The ramps are fun and smooth to shoot, and getting the ball flying around hitting combos is really satisfying. The left ramp is quite steep, and hitting it with a weak shot that doesn't carry it over the apex will result in a SDTM drain nearly every time. Overall, it's a fantastic layout.

It's a wide-body, but doesn't feel like one as it doesn't have that slow side-to-side action that a lot of wide-body pins seem to have.

The rules are pretty simple to understand, and the playfield lights really work well to tell you where the shots are. I'm guessing the guy who did the playfield art for DM also did Attack From Mars, as it's very reminiscent.

I'm not in love with the handles. I've played a few games with them, but I really prefer the flipper buttons.

The car crash and retina scan captive toys are pretty neat. Not so sure about them being right next to each other, though. This might be why it doesn't seem like a wide body, with these things taking up 1/5th of the table on the left side...

The claw is cool, and the mech to load it is pretty neat-o, with the ball rising out from behind the ramps.

Sound is a little thin, but great sounding. A sub-woofer will really help this game out.

Very good game, IMO.

Love DM and it was a hard choice to swap for TSPP, that's how much I like it!
Game play can get repetitive if you insist on always taking the lock from the claw award, but a little discipline really improves the game. If you can't do that yourself - simply disable the claw (as in PAPA tournaments) and you need to play a completely different strategy to get the top scores.
One of the few 'older' games where LEDs really improve the appearance.
Cannot believe it's not getting more love!

Never thought I would like DM. The triggers are awesome and really let you grip and move the machine. Hate the theme and speech. Horrible back glass, but the speed of the ball and the timing required on the skill shot makes this a must play. Also, the claw was a nice toy!
I might purchase DM if I can find one cheap. I would absolutely install new art in the back glass.
There were 30 pins at Play-Land Not at the Beach. I played DM the most that day. Give it a plunge if you see on location!

Excellent playing machine! Artwork is lack luster but flow and fun factor are excellent. The trigger buttons give it a very distinct feel. All in all a great game, especially for the price it usually commands.

The handles are good to look at but they dont respond as good as the side buttons - Ugly artwork keeps this from being part of a home collection

Demolition man has so much flow. A good ruleset. Good call outs. A great bang for the buck pin.

Great shot selection & good flow...love the combos to freeze balls & start the 4 different multiballs. The shot to start multiball is a bear to hit! Could have used better modes from the cyro claw. Got a bit repetitive to me over time...combo, combo, combo, multiball. Love Demolition Time start up sequence & animations...very cool!

There is no better satisfaction then combo shots. I sold roadshow for this, don't regret it.

Not a bad game. Has a good amount of flow and features. The handles are definitely something different! Look past the license and the backglass art and give it a try, you may not be disappointed!

Very good game!!! I like widebody cabinet and lot fun playing with handel. I'ts my favorite features of that game. Animations is very cool and speech it well. Just the horrible transligth with gib head from Silvester Stalone. The rest is Williams quality and very good game overall. Underrated game!

A widebody pin that can really get the ball moving. Dennis Nordman made a really flow oriented widebody with Demolition Man. The gun handles on the cabinet above the fllppers are an interesting concept, but do feel awkward to flip with....guess that's why you get a bonus for using them for combos on the game. They look futuristic, but many will not play with them.

When you are bricking all the ramp and loop shots, this game is no fun....when you are nailing them, the flow and grove you can get into feels like a real accomplishment. Definitely a fun table that rewards good shots.

Great game. Highly underrated. 5 multiball modes and the claw keep you working towards goals.

Demo man is a great game to own, especially for the price. The thing is built like a tank, even more so since it is a wide body. The flippers need to be really strong and rebuilt since ramps are quite steep. The game theme itself is alright, they based it sorta off the movie with not the most creative tie-ins of the movie itself.

There is actually a lot to do and a solid pin to have, even in a very small collection I'd recommend it.

this machine does rank high on the ugly meter, back box, side of cabinet and the playfield art is the hat trick. this is one to hide in a dark corner when not playing it but when you are this is a fine game, like the trigger handles, like the ramp layout, like the combos, like the multi-balls. the music and call outs are top notch on this game with a great flow that is on the slower side that allows you to perfect your nudging skills. a great starter pinball machine

I only played it a few times but it just did not hold my attention. Seemed like I was going from ramp to ramp to ramp. Crane grabs ball and you can drop it down....a ramp. Hate the back glass, big head of stallone staring at you. Maybe if I played it some more I will give it better rating, but for now, pass.

I really have done everything I can with this game. It has surprised me and then let me down and surprised me again, rinse and repeat. Dennis Nordman is a greatly under appreciated pinball game designer.

Pros:
Fun shots, combos and the handles are well integrated into the design. Multiballs are fun and thought out. Your scores are better by playing with the handles as designed. Pressing the thumb buttons at the right time help things out in a pinch. Demolition time (now with add-a-ball!) and the super duper jackpot at the end of the last multiball are a hoot. Man the ball screams around the pf when combos are being linked! The claw is a cool toy you can use to make strategic choices in the ruleset.

Secret Tip of the day.... Say you play the game with the regular pinball buttons in the cabinet and you have balls trapped on a single flipper. Now you want to hit the secret jackpot but you can't take your finger of the button that has the balls cradled. With your free hand to push the thumb button and then USE YOUR NOSE to press the other button simultaneously. You can leave a boogie for your opponent's turn if you want to or be nice and wipe off the thumb trigger when your turn ends. I have named this move "The Schnozzle"!

Cons:
Linda Deal painted 3 big heads on the bg. Doug Watson's design looked so much better. It just was not meant to be... This just confirms my belief that Wesley Snipes acts like a spoiled child. Game difficulty needs to be adjusted for play to be "somewhat" evened out. What really needs to happen is the game needs to be adjusted on a deeper level. Why shoot for the car lane or the eyeball, ever? That's the left hand 1/3rd of the playfield.

Takeaway:
A good game that really should have been great. Who knows the software was altered once already, it may happen again. Here's a simple request for a code jockey out there with some time on their hands. Each of the cryo claw awards can only be collected once before the rest are collected. There. Now the game requires a much more fully balanced play strategy and approach.

Update, Good news! my prayers have been answered. A European gentleman has taken a P-ROC board and invested some serious time and effort into this game. We shall see what he comes up with! It's almost as good as buying a new game!

Update v2, Good news came too late. Sold it to a fellow pinhead for a friend's wedding present. Happy Ending: A good game that has gone to a good home.

Update v3,
After listening to a friend who knew the game even better that I thought I did, I have to upgrade the scores a bit. Yes this game is still all about multiball modes. Even with the claw disabled, multiball is where the scores are at. The good thing about this is that for the longest time I thought the game had 2 sets of rules for multiball twice over. This is not the case there are some subtleties that make a big difference in the third and fourth multiball in particular. This of course can only make the Demolition Jackpot even sweeter. Shatzing the inlane to the Saucer for the "Huxley" award is one of my favorite shots on the B/W 90's generation games. I still hold reservations about the left 1/3rd of the game being wasted space and I have not played the P-ROC version of this table yet. So there is still hope. A P-Roc system isn't cheap, will it make a good game great? I have yet to find out. I look forward to the day when I can play the "new" version of this game and I sincerely hope that the passionate hobbyists out there that make the world a better place. Great flow, super fast for a widebody. Look past the backglass and this is a super fun game. They should've had Stallone and Snipes do more and better callouts, seems a bit repetitive for the era. to be fair Stallone calling out Replay! never gets old.
