this was my grill pinball that I had been on the hunt for five years. I sold it in less than six months

I'll keep it relative: this game is just okay by today's standards. But by 1981 standards this game kicks-ass. Some good shots and good overall gameplay. Not nearly as tedious as so many of the games of that era.

For its time this game was packed solid with features. Completely addictive game play and some of the coolest sound effects ever. One of my absolute favorites.

This game was a few years ahead of its time. It stands head and shoulders above the other Bally and Williams games of the era. Quite an advanced ruleset that forces the player to slow down and focus on the task at hand rather than adopting a "spray and pray" mentality. In an era when the Bally machines were hulking monsters that jammed as much as possible onto a widebody frame (sometimes at the expense of gameplay), Centaur uses its space wisely and offers some very unique shots. Fantastic art package that creates an overall nihilistic mood, and actually does not scream "Mad Max Ripoff" all these years later...it is a theme able to stand on its own merits. Overall, a fantastic, yet sometimes punishing, pingame.

"Destroy" other classic machines from this era!

What a deep game for those who understand the scoring. Plenty of options at any given time. Set mine up to be a real B!#$%. ORBs don't carry over from ball to ball. If you drain before making the release shot, you lose out on all that multiball.

One of the best attract modes in pinball. Machine launches it's 5 balls as if it is possessed. Even better, tap a flipper button before pressing start and Centaur will tell you about all of the game's "Features."

Can't beat that classic Reverb! Rich!

One of the best pins from the best era of pinball. Love these early 80's Bally games. I finally added this game to my collection, there not easy to find, nobody wants to get rid of it & when they do list them prices go up up & up! Worth it but, definite keeper for me. I chose the Limited Edition Centaur 2 over the Centaur as I prefer the unique cabinet of the LE C2. A unique table like this deserves a unique cabinet.
To sum it up this is an awesome game & I highly recommend 10/10!

Centaur is indeed a bad@ss machine, with awesome artwork and pretty cool speech. When it comes to the play, I did not find it that impressive though. The mutiball was good but I wasn't crazy about the flow or the overall feel of the game. For target shooting it is fun but not as much fun as others such as eight ball deluxe from that era. The outlane save ability is an awesome feature. Overall a pretty fun game with an undeniable cool factor!

Maybe my favorite playfield art of all time. One of the best players of its era. Ahead of its time multiball action.

The first pin I can remember playing with a multi ball feature which was cool for the time. Cost was only $0.20 AUD a game back then! How times have changed.
Art work is first class. A game I would always come back to, maybe someday I can add to my collection.

In a perfect world, Centaur is ranked in the top-10 all time.

If pinball is "art you play" -- then Centaur and Fathom are the winners.

Originality: 10+ A never-ending black and white drawing? Are you serious? That drawing took hundreds of hours to complete.

Art/Lights/Theme: 10+. Off the charts, full on heavy metal theme. It captures 1981 like no other design. Lighting is amazing. There are so many colors represented with the inserts it is very pleasing. The BG and PF artwork are spectacular. Coolness factor is off the charts. It's the total package.

Sound/Callouts: 10. Background sound is very cool. Speech is very cool. Has it's own real-time adjustable reverb unit built in. How incredible is that? An amazing voice was recorded for this. Reverb pushes it way over the line.

Flow: 10. It's non-stop action kind of flow, not one shot leading into another kind of flow.

Toys: 10. The fact that you can get multiballs whenever you accomplish almost any goal is very cool. This makes it the highest action game I've ever played. The balls never stop until you drain. (One exception: there's a magnet that occasionally holds the ball for 2 seconds, like in Gorgar, but that's it). The ability to recover some outlane drains by building one-way gates into the flipper return lanes is a neat way to train left-right nudging. Great idea.

Shots: Game has about 8 shots to take. (I count entire banks as 1 shot). -- I don't have to trap and set up every shot. I like that.

Multiball: somewhat easy to start (inlane/outlane is easiest) but the multi-ball play itself is GREAT. I use it to TRY to complete queen's chamber (I've never done it once)

Ball Control/Hazards: 10. Risk/Reward balance is very strong in this game. There are no easy shots to milk. Every shot can hurt you. It's how pinball was meant to be. Strangely, it's tricky to trap in this Bally game, which motivates you to take more live shots, which just adds to the fun.

Balanced Scoring: 10. Yes.

Fun/Lastability: 10+ You'll be pressing "start" every 2-3 minutes until mom tells you it's time for dinner.

Cons: (3)
I miss the absence of a spinner shot. I would replace the upper one-way ball gate with a spinner. I find the queen's chamber shot very difficult to make, that's not a con, that's just me complaining! Pops are worthless. They barely score for you. No skill shot.

Symmetry: Decent asymmetry with targets on right, and a loop on left, but overall rather symmetrical.

This game was one of the most risky ever produced, and not risky like playboy was risky, but risky in the fact that it could have totally been rejected by both arcades and bars in fear the dark and ominous theme would draw negative attention. And for that, Bally deserves a lot of credit for having the balls to release a pretty much satanic looking dark and evil game like this. The artwork is incredible (sans the back glass), the creepy voice and audio delay just adds to the feeling and theme. It is a totally killer game that immerses you in its world. I owned one for a bit, only sold it because I enjoy ramps too much.

Centaur is one of my favorite game. I still have not discovered all its secrets. But if you manage to keep the ball enough, it really grows on you.

The left and right saves give extra life to the table. It's a good beginners table with plenty of challenging shots to shoot for.
