I just purchased a Hallmark Klingon Bird Of Prey for modding.
I tried to link to the RGPARCHIVE in another post on the steps someone else posted a long time ago but it's a dead link now.
Anyone know if the link exists somewhere? I want to add LED's under the wings too but it appears the ship comes with a front light and a back light that is powered off a string of Christmas lights.

I would have to assume that is 117VAC and I can forget illuminating them?

Thank you bro!

I would recommend using 555 wedge base with flex heads.
They fit the area better and are hidden.

Personally I used 555 pop sockets and mod'd them to fit under the wing tight.

And who sells both of these?
Thanks!

I can take a picture of mine tonight if I remember. I went with 2-555 wedge base with red flex. I haven't installed it yet since I ordered a different sized standoff for it.

I bought my sockets from Pinballlife.com.
If you type in pop socket it should come up.
The leads are flexible black wire and the socket is black so it hides well.
I attached them to the ship using #4 screws into the red part of the wing on the BOP.
Also recommend adding a 330ohn resistor inline.

This one times 2 pieces?

I'm tired of looking at the #44 bulbs in my STNG BOP.

Originally I toyed with using some EL Panels cut to shape; but then I remembered they have a limited life span/brightness.

I decided that I wanted LEDs to lite the PF from under the wings; but I don't want to see the bulbs. Here's my first revision at a PCB to do this:

Each wing gets 3 Red super bright LEDs (SMT) and a constant current source.

I just realized I misunderstood the original mod and how it ties into both the GI and the inserts. As a result; I need to take it back to the drawing board to correct some wiring.

That's awesome Zitt. Too bad changing SMT LEDs isn't as easy as sockets. Dunno that I'd personally want red under there but apparently that's the popular option. News to me!

Wow!
Have you had one mocked up yet?
Planning to sell them?

SMT was a choice to get low profiles so you can't see them as a player.
Red for Klingon... most scenes in ... ?was it Undiscovered country? showed the bridge being mostly red wavelengths. So Naturally I grew the mod in that direction.
Having said that; a swap of a resistor and the LEDs should allow them to be done in any desired color (such as warm white).

No, last night I just finished the PCB design. I'll probably order the PCBs tomorrow. It'll take about 2wks to get them back from OSHPark.

I haven't determined what I'm going to do. I might license the design under TAPR/NCL ( http://www.tapr.org/NCL.html ) or partner with someone to build them. I'm leaning toward the former but we'll see.

That is super cool. I would guaranteed be down to buy one of these if you made them available. I always hated those bulky light sockets under the wings.

Would love to see the finished prototype!
I too don't like the bulky bulb sockets under the wings either as some other Pinsiders have commented.
Are we talking a long time off or relatively soon?

As requested; here are pictures of my finished prototype. Before - a Corgi diecast KBOP with lamps:

Replacing with Hallmark KBOP w/ prototype wing LEDs:

The PCB also seems to fit my Corgi KBOP from 2005.

I'll start my own thread in a few days... once I get the PCB, bom, etc packages ready for release at Pinball-Mods.com.

Very Very Nice!
I already have a Hallmark KBOP I bought about two months ago but didn't start to mod it.
Is your kit going to have the HallMark KBOP in it?
Any price point yet?

#20 9 years ago

No. At this point; I don't plan on selling anything. Right now; I'm planning on opensource hardware - you build it yourself.

#21 9 years ago

I posted details, schematics, etc in my own thread:

BOM costs seem to come to $14.55 / pair of boards.
