I'm having my basement finished and wanted to share. Two bedrooms, family room and most importantly... A 9x29 foot long game room. I'm having extra outlets put in every room as when rooms are not needed as bedrooms then they become game rooms too. .

    Anyways on with the pics.

    Before things get going.

That is gonna be sweet! Cant wait to see the updates

    #3 10 years ago

    cool, have fun

    #4 10 years ago

Nice space! I would love to have that much room for pins.

    #5 10 years ago

I love following these kinds of topics. You should be able to get 12-13 pins in the row with some nice move around room behind them. Keep us updated.

    #6 10 years ago

You gonna paint that ceiling black? That's what i did last time and coming up on my new redo.

EDIT: Now you're gonna need more than 4 machines

    #7 10 years ago

Thanks guys. I can't wait till its done.

    Quoted from MustangPaul:

The room is actually L shaped so I had them put the door to the furnace room as far over as they could so I don't block it with a pin. In the bottom part of the L shape I can get two more in. So counting those two and measuring the main wall I think I can get a total of 13.

    Quoted from TheLaw:

You gonna paint that ceiling black? That's what i did last time and coming up on my new redo.

No black paint. I thought about it but also wanted to add extra insulation above gameroom for sound. I'm doing a drop and going with 2x2 tiles with track lights on a dimmer.

    #8 10 years ago

Your not going to drop the ceiling to the level of the duct work are you.

    -1
    #9 10 years ago

Thats going to be a really nice wall of pins when you done.

    Keep us updated.

I'm envious you even have the option to drop the ceiling. Can't fit one game in my basement as the ceiling is too low by one inch.

    #11 10 years ago
    Quoted from MustangPaul:

Your not going to drop the ceiling to the level of the duct work are you.

No. The duct work will be drywall. The drop will be 3 to 4 inches from floor joists. The main sewer drain that runs the length of the house will be hidden in the wall of the arcade.

    Quoted from pinballsmith:

I'm envious you even have the option to drop the ceiling. Can't fit one game in my basement as the ceiling is too low by one inch.

I really lucked out on this house. It had rained for three days straight when I came to look at it and you couldn't smell any moisture in the basement. And with the height of the walls I had to get. Plus the heated garage is a nice bonus.

    #13 10 years ago

Congrats. As someone going through this now, plan for it to take more time and $ than planned, especially if you add "just one more thing" a few times ...

    #14 10 years ago
    Quoted from MustangPaul:

How many sq. ft. is the basement?

Around 1300 Sq ft. Not big enough but still decent.

    Quoted from jfh:

Congrats. As someone going through this now, plan for it to take more time and $ than planned, especially if you add "just one more thing" a few times ...

That's what I think will happen too. The contractor quoted me $23,500.00. But I'm sure it will be pushed up a little more. The other quote I got was $29,000.00. Guess what one I went with...so far he's doing a great job. Keeping me in the loop with the small changes that have to be made. And giving me options on how he should continue. He wants my SWE1 so I said we "might" be able to work that into the deal. I'm not telling him yes or no till I get the final price when the works all done. If the game keeps him on track and keeps him doing a good job then I'll use it as bait. Lol. It is only star wars and I'm really bored with it anyway. We shall see what happens.

    #15 10 years ago

GREAT SPACE! Thumbs up and congrats on the house!

Are you planning on having a TV down there or some speakers for pumping music? Now is the time to do a beautiful behind the wall install with all the walls exposed. It's awesome when you don't have to worry about wires dangling all over the place and there's nothing like a good clean install.

It's gonna be great down there bro. GL moving forward.

    #16 10 years ago

Awesome post. Always cool following along projects. I like the SWE1 as bait idea!

Pinfidel has a great point about speaker wiring in not going wireless/TV cabling too.

What's your floor plan for covering? Paint, carpet, tile?

    #17 10 years ago

Looking awesome! Pinbot's gonna be living in a great place! Can't wait to see the progress.

    #18 10 years ago

Yeah a TV is going in family room. I'm having them put an outlet and cable hook up hi on the wall. And also add the speaker wire for the surround sound.

Thanks Ryan. You should come down sometime when it's all done. And give pinbot a workout for old times sake.

I'm going with carpet. After playing my games on the cold cement I decided I didn't like cold feet.

Very exciting! Are you going to be doing the work yourself, or hired? I'm looking into a similar project soon. ...also in Michigan.

I could probably do the work but it would take me a few years of head scratching before it got done.

I'm going with a contractor to get it done hopefully in a month or two.

I've already started my rebuild. Us Michigan guys have been beaten by the weather long enough!

That's right. That winter sucked. But now if we have another, I'll be all cozy in my finished basement/arcade.

    #25 10 years ago

This in this current state looks alot like my father in law's basement space!

If so, you will have a VERY nice room when you are done! Lots of room.

Will follow your progress Love to see how others do up their basements.

I think I can get a total of 13 pinballs in.

You'll have to find a way to make it 14. Thirteen's too unlucky a number.

    #29 10 years ago

Actually 13 is my lucky number. My son was born on the 13th, my last name starts with the letter M (13th letter of the alphabet), shoe size is13, my locker number at work is 13 , and my random license plate number has a 13 on the Jeep I bought that was 13 years old when I bought it. So yeah 13 comes up a lot in my life.Lol. but I'd love to have one extra pin if I can squeeze it in there.

For carpet padding I suggest getting the 3/8in. thick memory foam pad, it acts as a vapor barrier and is non algenic and anti microbal (sp on both those ). I put it under my black light carpet and it's just soft enough for your feet but the game doesn't sink down into it with carpet sliders. Menards sells it (if you have a Menards). What ever you do don't buy that chip crap foam, the weight of the games will destroy it.

    #32 10 years ago

Thanks for the tip. The contractor said something about some new padding product that is ment for concrete basements. We'll see when the time comes.

    Anyway time for some updates.

Are you going to have a pin work area?

    #34 10 years ago
    Quoted from MustangPaul:

Are you going to have a pin work area?

For now it's going to be at the far end of the room. But as kids move on to start their lives I'll use one of the rooms to work on the pins. The other room for more games. I'm having extra power ran to the rooms including the family room, just in case the pins take over that space too.

Look on Craigslist for carpet. I live near St. Louis and looked for about three weeks until I found some on Craigslist. It was at a warehouse in downtown St. Louis where they were liquidating a bunch of stuff from a Casino that went out of business here. The ad said, "Unused Carpet Rolls in Wild Colors".

I found a brand-new roll of low-pile dark purple striped carpet cut to the exact size I need ready to go. It looks like it was purchased for a 1970s-80s arcade. I paid $100 for a $500 or more piece of carpeting. A freakin' awesome find.

They had a lot of other game room friendly stuff there too like barstools and bar equipment but I was focused on just getting the carpet that day.

That's awesome. I bet you were happy as a kid in an arcade to find that deal. I'll keep my eyes open and see what I can find. Thanks for the tip.

On a side note. One of the guys working said he had a glass that had some crazy painting on it. Said he was told it went to a pinball. He told me he'd give it to me for a chair I already had in a dump pile ready to go to the dump. Done deal. Lol. So it looks like I'm getting a Al's garage band backglass for wall art.

I didn't either. The big thing for me is standing for a long time on concrete playing was wearing on me.

I'd keep a look out for carpet squares too provided they're quality ones. They're usually commercial and hold up well. So far it been a good combo for me using the squares on Dricore.

Another good idea. I could mix an match colors and come up with my own patterns.

The carpet tiles I got were meant for 1/4 turn so I went this way, but yes, you can really do all sorts of different things. Lucked out buy getting these Mohawk from work for free as they wanted to get rid of the extras they had and only kept two boxes. Nobody at work wanted them because they are "busy" but for a game room, they're perfect.

This one I'm having them drywall over. If I add a door to hide this one I know the kids would use it as a trash can. I'd rather cut through the drywall if I ever need to, then have my walls become full of trash.

I'd say they the two of them working on this kicked some ass for 5 1/2 days of work.

You could put these plastic covers on them:
    http://www.homedepot.com/s/plastic%2520cover%2520plumbing?NCNI-5

Not easy to open, paintable, and will hide the spots nicely. They are in other sizes too.

Great solution. I've had to use several for my basement. I used a steel door with slotted screws for the PRV but you can use the plastic to paint/cover to match that is spring loaded for quick removal like water shut offs, etc. Went with the plastic spring loaded for the areas of what shut offs, and clean outs.

You might need to put an access panel in front of the clean out that you are planning on drywalling over. I was planning on doing that too for my clean out and shower feed shut off valves, but I was told in order to pass final plumbing inspection I had to have access panels anywhere there was a shut off/main supply/cleanout. Might want to check on that. I'll second the use of those paintable access panels. I used all 6x9 size and a couple 14" square ones for my basement. They are painting it as we speak and they will blend in nicely and are easy to pop open when needed.

    Looking good though!

Thanks for the link and idea guys. I just worry that it will be used as a trash can for a teenage boy as its in his room. And even though I'd give him an ass whipping if he did. I think it would be to tempting to just throw things in the wall. Im covering it. If I have to add a door later then I will. Its easy enough for do.
