After seeing a post on JP and TAF I decided that my Baywatch was calling me to add color. When I started the project i was somewhat concerned over how hard it would be to install but DMD Extender Sega instructions it was easy. After the install I was a little surprised when I tuned Baywatch on and nothing happened. After writing David, at Dr Pinball he was able to figure out my issues and get me going. Now I'll be the first to admit that my ColorDMD in Whitewater (also spent time in my TAF) is a much nicer solution but how soon will the ColorDMD team get to Baywatch, even with added staff.

Now the hard part is going to be picking colors that work. Here's my first attempt.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Waldo

I wish I still had mine to try. Nice work!

#3 10 years ago

Cool, but the smoothing/pixelation looks awful. What's going on there?

#5 10 years ago

I just turned the smoothing off (looks 100x better) still working on the colors. i figured out the background needs to be black.

#6 10 years ago

You must be running the new 0.9 firmware that supports smoothing. Personally plain dots look awesome to me. The pixels in this case aren't being drawn correctly and that's why they are skewed and distorted. David, will there be support to adjust the image size? Evidently it doesn't come all the way up and leaves a margin at the top.

Check out this video to get an idea on colors. David can you post the palette info you used in this example?

#7 10 years ago

Going off that video I would rather have mine stay orange, promising technology though....

#8 10 years ago

No wonder why it takes colorDMD so long to make a rom patch, clearly just swapping the colors out of the shaded palette doesn't do much.

Nice job getting a SEGA display working though Walter

You can adjust the size to get rid of the margin. Off hand I think it's the offset settings. You can put negative values in to bring the image up. Putting the right values in will stretch the image out to fit your window.

It is possible to choose colors that would go better together on all screens. I've got one in my JP and love it. I put together a great color combination with just changing the 4 shades to colors.

And can you update your JP thread with the color codes you used? That look AMAZING man!

Hi

To answer a few of the points above...
Smoothing... it's the effect I call ZX Speccy as it's extremely blocky... and not very nice. This effect was in v0.7 along with normal, vertical and horizontal scan lines. It was easy to add this effect into the software but it's not necessarily one you'd choose to use.

The video size is determined by the screen you're using. The DMD section always fills the full width, the aspect ratio setting determines the height that will be filled - this must be set correctly for your screen to ensure the image looks right. The overscan option allows you to adjust the borders, but this is primarily used for composite screens where there's an analogue component to the video signal. On HDMI/DVI I believe the image will always fill the full width of the screen.

To move the DMD image up and down use the DMD Position setting - set it to custom for fine control within the speaker panel window.

Waldo34, I believe, is using a 17.3" 16:9 screen, which is the same that I used in my Baywatch. This screen is slightly smaller than the original DMD and hence you see more of a gap at the top. To alleviate this Waldo needs to shift the DMD section upwards a little using the DMD position setting. Some other customers have used 18.4" screens which really fill the window, but these are harder to get hold of and cost more - my Application Note on replacing the large Sega screens suggests using the 17.3" screen. The result is extremely satisfactory.

The colours I used in Baywatch are as follows:
100% - FFCC00
90% - 00F4F4
75% - FF0000
0% - 000000
Background - 000000

Just enter these into the relevant fields on the configuration tool dot colour section.

If these aren't to your taste it's very easy to setup a standard graduated scheme just like the original plasma display - either orange or from any other base colour.

Many thanks for all your support - David.

I also used a palette based on a light blue colour complete with custom animated graphics displayed on a 50" plasma display. I did this at a pinball event I organised at my local village hall. The screen really added to the atmosphere, especially as there was a high score competition on the Baywatch so everyone could keep track of what was happening...

Sorry, it's not available in the UK.

Ok thanks for looking into it.

In my screenshot, the Screen Border settings is what I used to get the screen stretched the way I wanted. At least it seemed like after I made changes to these settings, I was able to get the screen positioned and stretched the way I wanted.

Will do. Also available in my screenshot posted here.

Since it's easier to show when it's squashed in vs. stretched out, here's proof that the screen can be adjusted with the Screen Border settings, even through HDMI. I set the left to 200 and the right to 300.

I don't know if I'm using these settings in the way they were intended, but the way I understand them to work is negative stretches the screen away from the center and the positive squashes it towards the center. So, for example, a negative on the Top value means the screen gets stretched upward, but a positive on the top means it gets squashed downward. So think about the edge you're adjusted and figure out if you want to stretch away from the center or towards the center.

What I do is get the screen positioned where I want with the custom Position value, and then fine-tune with the Screen Border settings. For me, I get it so that the entire screen is visible from the position I'd be standing in when playing, and butts right up against the edges of the window. It can take some time to get it right, but I like having this flexibility.

Lots of fun with this project. The colors have been updated and display adjusted. I happy with the way it turned out.

Would I do this again? Yes. However, I would chose something more like my Champion Pub because the DMD has allot less detail.

I understand the mod is not for everyone but not every mod is.

I would like to say I have not met nor emailed David of Dr Pinball before but 5 stars to his custom service and product.

Are you still getting a black bar at the bottom, or is that not visible when you're standing in playing position?

#21 10 years ago

My centering is a bit off, it now closer to the top. I picked up a TFTC tonight, moving and setting up took longer then expected. Needless to say, I'm a bit to tired, to play with it tonight. However, with the minor change I made it already looks better, the gap on top was crazy.

Well, when you're up for it, I think you might be able to stretch it out a bit with the Screen Border settings. I recommend starting with 50 in the bottom value and leaving the others at 0. See if that gets you close to the bottom or beyond it and adjust accordingly.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here? I can't figure this out. The connector won't fit in where I think it's supposed to go where it say SMD....

Here you go good luck. I have my setup currently in a Congo. The all green DMD is very cool.

I got this far and it's just stuck. Even removing the SD card it stays here...any clue "what's next"?

Also I went ahead and just tested it all back together as if it was working and ran into a problem.

The screen is poking up too high to clear the light box door. UGH! What display did you buy?

IMG_2936.JPGIMG_2936.JPG

The screen will do this, it's normal. Reason being its impossible to find one that's short enough. Just close the backbox door, then re-install the speaker panel. You may need to remove a GI lamp or two from the backbox door to get it to sit far enough back. And of course, to get into the backbox you must remove the panel again.

Follow up to Crash's note. Yes, the screen is slightly too large, I removed the bottom couple of bulbs from behind it. See above pictures for slight shadow.

What do you mean by stuck? Does it not get past the Dr Pinball screen? If so write David at Doctor Pinball as I have not had that issue. His customer service is awesome. Normally, if you see the boot screen and no error code it will load to the pinball rom.

I've been working with him a lot lately in PM and it's an issue with the DMD driver board not starting up. The machine seems to be a bit of a basket case actually... Feel kinda bad for the guy. Thanks anyway though.

#29 9 years ago

Yeah David has been helping quite a bit. Got a friend who said "send me the power supply and DMD board and let me look at them and fix them if they need it...."

It's a temperamental machine! Once I can get past this screen issue I have just 1-2 little goofy things that need to be addressed.

Coin door opened- fires up and everything is 100 normal.

Coin door shut- dark.

My bald spot is getting bigger from rubbing my head.
