Would probably depend on the circuit design. The TIP is a transistor and probably had additional biasing. The IRL is a logic level Mosfet. Its gate is designed to be turned on by a simple 5V logic signal.
can this be replaced with any other TIP transistor? i have everything from 31-36, but oddly no 32 on hand..
Problem with a TIP36 (and anything above a TIP32) is it's a physically different/larger package (TO-3P vs TO-220). You would have difficulty mounting it properly to dissipate the heat generated. And a TIP31 is the compliment to a TIP32 so you can't use it in its place (even though it's in the same package.)
