I was looking at the layout for Baywatch (I know, I know...) and checked out the flyer for it and found a couple of interesting tidbits...the flyer says "New self-cleaning pop bumper switches! They virtually eliminate the need for cleaning." What is this? And are these still used?

Also, it says "New wrap around side rails! Baywatch delivers wider and deeper shots without expanding the size of the cabinet." Now this looks pretty cool to me. About an inch of playfield space is gained with this and the cabinet is still the same size. Pretty cool. Was this ever used again? If not, why not?

Hmmm...I guess these aren't interesting?

#3 11 years ago

I used to own a Baywatch and am interstead in this Baywatch always seemed like a widebody sitting next to my Ngg

The shooter lane is basically eliminated to give more room. The ball enters through a wire ramp that starts elevated. Not sure if this was done on any other segas.

Self cleaning pop switches are from the motion on them. They wipe as they make contact, keeping them clean. Older Data East/sega pops are in need of a lot of adjustment compared to these.

Baywatch is a very underrated game. If WMS made a game with this playfield layout and different theme everyone would be creaming their panties over it. The flow and shots are well done. It is a challenging game to score high on, the only thing unbalanced is the super jackpot, but it is very tough objective. Sure you can time out the modes and get through everything but your score is going to suffer.

Are you sure that's it? It seems the black wood "rails" on the sides of the playfield are gone too. Take a look at the pics on ipdb.

That sounds like the opposite of Hurricane, which wastes the entire shooter lane by slowly elevating into a wireform that runs almost the right hand side. It then wastes some more with an unnecessarily wide upper ramp plastic. In fact almost the entire upper right is lost to a single ramp.

I'd even be happy if Baywatch were a whitewater sega, but the DE driver board scares me off --no shortage of horror stories and a shortage of hardware out there. is this bias wrong?

Thanks!

I own a baywatch. there is not the old style wood frame around the outside, but metal. This gains maybe a 1/2" - 1" of space. Not sure if this was done on other segas

Baywatch is dope

I love mine

It's unlikely to leave my house ever since its so much cooler than the small amount of cash it commands when sold. MM this ain't!

#9 11 years ago

I would like to own bw again olny reason I sold mine dmd was dead and did not feel like dropping 500$ for a new dmd this is another reason bw go cheap the layout is pretty sweet !

I think you're right that this game uses more of the cabinet width than others. I looked at most of the games that came just before and after it, and I can't find another that uses the same width.

The elevated ball launch doesn't do any good unless you use the room underneath it, which they didn't do with Baywatch. STTNG actually does use the area under the elevated ball launch, so not only do you have a widebody, you have a widebody that uses the entire width of the lower playfield.

#12 11 years ago

This is a hidden gem. For the price tag, I have pin ADD, yet this one has not left my collection. Plus who doesn't like staring at Pamela Andersons goods? Forget about look at the Hoff though...only downer. This game just rocks!

#13 11 years ago

BW is a great title and definitely an under-rated / value Pin. Get one if you can, won't regret it.

Tidal Wave gate/kick-back mechanisms are in this area of playfield that the ramp is "elevated" over. Pretty important part of game and rule-set IMO.

And is very cool feature used in many modes to feed the upper left flipper. Also you can park multiple balls in that kick out during multiball which is nice

#16 11 years ago

^^^^^^Exactly...

#17 11 years ago

How many Baywatch did they make? I've never seen one so was looking at IPMD at the pics, and it doesn't like production run like they normally do. My mom recently got a Frankenstein and loves the big DMD on it, so it would be nice to at least see one of these in person someday.

#18 11 years ago

I think a lot of the Baywatch run got exported. My dad's is from Germany and mine is from Japan. Germans love the Hoff and foreigners loved Baywatch tv show.

Agreed with the comments that if Baywatch was a B/W game, it would be worth way more OR if it was themed differently. The theme simply doesn't hold up, and the art package went for 110% sex and nothing else. Look at the side of a cabinet and you'll see that this is probably the most pornographic 90s era pin made, and it isn't classy. I own one, and I HATE the cabinet. If it just said, "BAYWATCH" and nothing else, it would have been ten times better.

Having said all that, the gameplay is amazingly solid. It has SO much going on. A "thing flips" flipper, the unique layout that really does basically cram a widebody into a standard body pin, lots of combos and flow... it's an outstanding game overall. Take away the tacky T&A, and / or label it with a Bally/Williams logo, and it would be a $4k game I think. It's going to be stuck where it is because of that though.

If it didn't have the T&A, it would probably sell for even less! LOL. I love the side art, cameltoe and all!

There's even a HUGE DICK HEAD on the translite! Oh wait, that's Hoff.

Baywatch is a great playing game. I recently sold mine after 6 months simply because a friend wanted it. Based on game play alone, it's a top 20 game. The theme, well, that alters the ranking a little bit. Everybody will have a different opinion on that.

I've attached a few mods I did to mine. They are all cosmetic, but look cool and enhance the overall look of the game.

I like the game too, lots of cool shots and agree that the feed to the upper left flipper is very cool, and also the shark flip, neat feature.

Yeah, that camel toe is crazy, what were they thinking...lol. I mean I like it, but it's not family friendly and baywatch is really a good bar machine...NOT. It's corny and fun at the same time.

Girls are hot on the cabinet, never thought once that it took away from the looks. And yes, it plays awesome.
